The short, honest version of how Jovo handles your data.

What this policy covers

This page explains what Jovo ("we", "our", "the app") records when you use the Jovo mobile application and any services that plug into it. We wrote it to be readable on a phone at midnight — not just in a boardroom.

By installing or opening Jovo you agree to the practices described below. If something here doesn't sit right with you, please stop using the service and reach out using the contact details at the end.

Information we collect

We collect the smallest amount of data needed to keep Jovo running. In practice that breaks down into three buckets:

a) You tell us

  • Account basics: nickname, age confirmation, avatar, the email you sign up with.
  • Profile flair: bio text, interests, and any photos you upload yourself.
  • Stuff you send: messages, voice notes, live-stream chat, and video frames during calls (video frames are not stored on our servers unless you hit "save").

b) Your device tells us

  • Device model, OS version, language, and a rotating advertising identifier.
  • Coarse location derived from your IP address (city-level, never GPS — we don't ask for that).
  • Crash reports and basic performance metrics so we can keep the app stable.

c) Usage patterns

  • Which screens you open, which buttons you tap, how long streams stay alive. No keystroke logging, no microphone sniffing outside of active calls.

Sensitive data & permissions

Some features need your phone's permission before they can do anything. Jovo asks for a permission only at the moment the feature is used — never up-front and never in bulk.

  • Camera & microphone — active only during live streams and video calls you start yourself.
  • Photo library (read) — used when you pick an avatar or attach a picture to a chat.
  • Notifications — optional pings for messages, matches, and live-room invites.
You can revoke any of these permissions in your phone's system settings at any time. Jovo will keep running, just without the feature that needed the permission.

How we use your information

  • Make the app work: sign-in, matching, live streams, chat delivery, and payment processing.
  • Keep things safe: detect spam, abuse, fraud, under-age sign-ups, and behaviour that violates our Terms.
  • Improve the product: anonymised analytics to help us spot slow screens and broken flows.
  • Talk to you: service emails, policy changes, replies from support. Marketing emails only go out if you opt in.

Sharing & third parties

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in a few narrow situations:

  • Service providers — cloud hosting, payment processors, SMS/email delivery, crash analytics. They act on our instructions and under strict contracts.
  • Legal obligation — if a valid court order or law requires disclosure, we release only what is strictly required and, where allowed, notify the user.
  • Business change — in a merger or acquisition, user data may transfer, but the same commitments in this policy continue to apply.

Data security

We take reasonable engineering steps to protect what you share with us:

  • Transport encryption (HTTPS / TLS) between your device and our servers.
  • At-rest encryption for message bodies, credentials, and payment tokens.
  • Access to production data is scoped to a small engineering group and logged.
  • A documented incident-response process so that the right people get paged when something goes wrong.

No security program is perfect. If you notice something that looks like a vulnerability, please let us know right away.

Your rights

Wherever you are in the world, you can ask us to:

  • Show you a copy of the data tied to your account.
  • Correct information that's wrong or out of date.
  • Delete your account and its associated data (see §8).
  • Turn off marketing messages and optional analytics.
  • Transfer a structured export of your profile to another service.

To use any of these rights, email us from the address tied to your account. We respond within 30 days in most cases.

Retention & deletion

We keep each category of data only as long as there's a reason to:

  • Active-account data — for as long as the account exists.
  • Chat messages — kept while both sides still have the conversation; erased when either party deletes it.
  • Payment records — retained for the period required by applicable tax and anti-fraud law.
  • Moderation logs — 180 days, unless an open safety case needs them longer.

When you delete your account, your profile becomes invisible immediately and is purged from primary systems within 30 days; encrypted backups are overwritten on their normal rotation (up to 90 days).

International transfers

Jovo serves a global audience, so data may move across borders to reach our cloud regions and support partners. When data leaves its country of origin, we rely on standard contractual clauses or other legally recognised safeguards to keep the same level of protection in place.

Children's privacy

Jovo is an 18+ service. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and accounts identified as belonging to minors are disabled and removed. For more detail, see our Children Safety Policy.

Regional notes (GDPR / CCPA)

If you're in the EEA or the UK

You have the rights listed in §7 under the GDPR, plus the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. Our legal bases are: contract performance (running the service you signed up for), legitimate interest (fraud prevention, service improvement), consent (marketing messages), and legal obligation (tax, regulatory reporting).

If you're in California or a similar US state

We do not sell personal information as that term is defined under the CCPA/VCDPA. You may request a report of the categories of personal information we collect, ask us to delete it, or opt out of targeted advertising. We will not discriminate against you for using any of these rights.

Changes to this policy

We update this page when the product or the law shifts. Material updates are announced inside the app at least 14 days before they take effect so you have time to review. Continuing to use Jovo after that date counts as accepting the new version.
